Yesterday, a crowd of congregants was dumbstruck when the principal Mass in honor of the patron saint, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, was officiated by Monsignor Carlos Urrutigoity, who has been denounced for alleged sexual abuse.

In the absence of Bishop Rogelio Livieres Plano, Father Urrutigoity, who is vicar general of the Diocese of Ciudad del Este, was tasked with officiating yesterday’s Mass. “My God, how wrong this is,” whispered several female parishioners who came to participate in the celebrated religious festival.

Many people haven’t forgotten the soap opera-esque saga that featured Father Urrutigoity and the numerous denunciations made against him for alleged sexual harassment and abuse.

The Argentine has been active in the local diocese, where Bishop Livieres put him in charge of San José Seminary. But the general public erupted in protest when the serious denunciations against him surfaced on the Internet.
