ACCUSED BOSTON CLERICS
Revised February 29, 2008

Color Key: 207 total clerics – 163 diocesan priests, 43 in religious orders [35 priests and 8 brothers], and 1 deacon

This page presents BishopAccountability.org's current tally of accused priests who worked in the Boston archdiocese. This is a partial list. The Boston archdiocese has not released the names of all the priests it knows have been credibly accused, although some other large dioceses have done this (see Baltimore and Los Angeles, for example).

For more information about the priests on our list, please consult the BishopAccountability.org accused priest database. The database does not exactly match the following list, for two reasons: a) two nuns are included in the database but not here, and b) this list includes five priests who worked in several dioceses, including Boston, but are assigned in the database to a different diocese. These priests are: Richard J. Ahern CSS (listed as a Springfield MA priest in the database), Charles G. Coyle SJ (New Orleans), Thomas Dempsey (LaCrosse WI), Francis J. McManus SJ (Norwich CT), and James R. Porter (Fall River MA).

This is a list of accused priests, not a list of guilty or convicted priests. Some of the priests on this list have been sent to jail for sexually abusing minors. Others have denied the charges against them and will never be prosecuted because the statute of limitations has lapsed. In our legal system, an accused person is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Some other lists and counts of accused Boston priests are:
- USA Today 11/11/02 list of accused priests: 61 named priests
- Reilly report 7/23/03 count: 237 unnamed priests [PDF p. 19]
- Boston Globe 3/5/03 list of priests removed: 48 named priests
- Boston John Jay 2/26/04 count: 216 unnamed priests: 162 diocesan, 44 order, 10 extern
