Call It Abuse

By Marge Lenane

Laurie Goodstein and Debbie Wilgoren's article "4 Area Priests Removed for Past Sexual Abuse" [front page, Feb. 6] contained an erroneous and misleading term. The Rev. Alphonsus Smith did not have a "sexual relationship" with his victim; "relationship" implies mutuality and choice. Molesting and sexually abusing the victim by rape, sodomy, pornography or fondling is not engaging in a sexual relationship -- it is abuse and molestation.

It is gratifying to see Catholic officials respond to the hundreds of thousands of dollars they have paid out in the past 10 years for settling sexual abuse charges against priests out of court by finally removing these robbers-of-childhoods, instead of transferring them to unsuspecting parishes.
