Father Anthony Mercieca has been identified by the Palm Beach State Attorney's Office as former Representative Mark Foley's alleged abuser. The Archdiocese of Miami communications office received this announcement at 11:30 a.m.

Father Mercieca, ordained for the Diocese of Gozo, Malta, worked in the Archdiocese of Miami (which included areas now in the Diocese of Palm Beach) in the mid-sixties through the early 2000s.

The Archdiocese of Miami is distressed by the revelations disclosed by Father Mercieca regarding former Representative Mark Foley. Such behavior is morally reprehensible, canonically criminal and inexcusable. The events described are totally contrary to the ministry of a priest.

There have been no other allegations of such behavior reported to the Archdiocese of Miami involving Father Mercieca.

In light of these revelations, in accord with the norms of Church law, Archbishop John Favalora, Archbishop of Miami, is withdrawing Father Mercieca's faculties and has initiated an internal investigation of this matter, which could result in ecclesiastical sanctions against Father Mercieca. The bishop of Gozo, where Father Mercieca lives in retirement, has been notified of these decisions.

An apology is due to Mr. Foley for the hurt he has experienced. While it was long in coming, with God's merciful grace this painful revelation can be the beginning of reconciliation and an instrument of redemption and healing for Mr. Foley.

The Archdiocese of Miami would ask if anyone has been a victim of inappropriate behavior or abuse by Father Mercieca to please notify us by calling the Archdiocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator at 1-866-802-2873 or contact a law enforcement agency.
