The Rev. John M. Cotter, administrator of St. Theresa's Church in Revere, died at the parish rectory Friday. He was 55 and had been a priest for 29 years.

Father Cotter was born Feb. 17, 1934, in Chelsea.

He graduated from Cardinal O'Connell Junior Seminary in Jamaica Plain and St. John's Seminary in Brighton, and was ordained Feb. 2, 1960, at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston by Richard Cardinal Cushing.

Throughout his career, Father Cotter served as an assistant at St. Margaret's parish in Beverly Farms and St. Theresa's parish in West Roxbury and as associate pastor at St. John's parish in North Beverly and St. Joseph's parish in Ipswich.

He was appointed administrator at St. Thesesa's in Revere on July 15.

Father Cotter is survived by his mother, Helen Cotter of Revere; two brothers, Daniel and Michael of the Washington, D.C., area; two sisters, Catherine Crane of Peabody and Sister Jean Marie Cotter, his twin, of New York.

Father Cotter will lie in state today from 2 to 8 p.m. at St. Theresa's, 500 Revere St., Revere. Bernard Cardinal Law will perform the Rite of Christian burial tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
