  Priest Pleads Innocent

A priest who served at San Clemente Parish here has pleaded innocent to a charge that he raped a former altar boy 10 years ago.

The Rev. John Esquibel entered his plea through his attorney during a brief arraignment Friday.

District Judge William Sanchez released Esquibel into the custody of his brother, who lives in Albuquerque, until trial.

Sanchez also ordered Esquibel not to leave New Mexico and not to contact anyone connected with the case.

Thc Valencia County grand Jury recently indicted Esquibel, 54, on a single count or criminal sexual penetration in the case.

Esquibel was suspended from his duties last March by the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

A trial date has not been set.
