***Corrections and Clarifications*** Published 21.09.1995 A headline with a Dateline Iowa item Wednesday about the Rev. Gerald Hartz of Carroll erred in stating that the priest has been indicted. He has been charged with assault and indecent contact with a teen-ager, but the charges were not brought by a grand jury.

Carroll, Ia. - A Carroll priest who has been charged with improperly touching a teen-ager has temporarily stepped down from his duties, Carroll police said.

Sioux City Diocese Bishop Lawrence Soens said the Rev. Gerald Hartz, 62, of St. Lawrence Catholic Church will not celebrate Mass on Sunday and has left his duties in accordance with diocese policy. Hartz was charged Friday with assault and indecent contact. Officials allege Hartz deliberately touched clothing covering the breast of a 13-year-old student at St. Lawrence School in Carroll.

Hartz couldn't be reached for comment.
