Priest to Plead Guilty in Child Pornography

South Bend Tribune (Indiana)
March 13, 1996

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Evansville priest has been charged with receiving child pornography through the mail, and federal prosecutors say he intends to plead guilty.

Rev. Jean Francis Vogler, 51, was accused of using the U.S. Postal Service on Dec. 6 to receive a video tape that showed children engaging in sex acts. Two days later, Vogler resigned his post as head of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He remains a priest.

Judith A. Stewart, U.S. attorney for the southern district of Indiana, filed the charge against Vogler in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis. In accompanying documents, Vogler notified the court he would waive indictment by a grand jury and plead guilty.

The maximum sentence for receiving child pornography is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
