Priest Is Sentenced for Child Pornography

South Bend Tribune (Indiana)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A former Evansville parish priest has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to receiving child pornography through the mail.

Jean Francis Vogler, 51, was sentenced Thursday. He will also serve two years of supervised release and pay a $3,000 fine.

Vogler resigned Dec. 8 from Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Evansville. His resignation came two days after federal authorities searched the church rectory and found 10 videotapes of child pornography and several child-pornography magazines.

United States District Judge Gene Brooks recommended Vogler be incarcerated in a prison facility which provides treatment for sex offenders and receive further treatment during his period of supervised release.

Vogler was accused of obtaining video tapes of children engaging in sexual conduct.

Vogler was caught in a national investigation after U.S. Customs Service agents arrested a distributor in 1993. Federal authorities continued to run the distributor's company - known as Overseas Male and Island Male - and Vogler ordered videos as recently as August 1995, Postal Inspector Steve Sadowitz said.
