Priest Sentenced to a Year and a Day in Prison for Receiving Kiddie Porn

Indianapolis Star
December 20, 1996

A Carmelite priest from southern Indiana will spend about a year in a federal corrections facility - not to preach but to serve time for receiving a videotape of child pornography.

U.S. District Judge Gene Brooks sentenced the Rev. Mark Ciganovich on Thursday to a year and a day.

Brooks also ordered Ciganovich to pay a $ 3,000 fine and serve two years on supervised release, U.S. Attorney Judith Stewart said.

Ciganovich pleaded guilty earlier this year to receiving child pornography in the mail.

The Carmelite order removed Ciganovich from any public ministry after learning this spring of the investigation. Ciganovich had been on the faculty at St. Meinrad School of Theology, where he taught moral theology.

A federal investigation into the distribution of child pornography through the U.S. Postal Service also nabbed another southern Indiana priest.

In June, Brooks also sentenced the Rev. Gene Vogler to a year and a day imprisonment and a $ 3,000 fine. Vogler was the former pastor of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Evansville.
