An Essex County man sued the Boston Catholic Archdiocese and a former priest yesterday, alleging that he was sexually abused more than 30 years ago when he was an altar boy at a Bradford church.

The man, identified in court papers only as John Doe, filed the suit this week in Essex Superior Court against the archdiocese and Paul David White of Haverhill.

The abuse allegedly occurred over several years at Sacred Heart Church beginning in 1964, when White was a priest there.

John Walsh, spokesman for the Archdiocese, said he could not comment on the lawsuit.

White, identified in the lawsuit as a Latin teacher at Haverhill High School, could not be reached for comment.

Jack Phelan, Haverhill assistant schools superintendent, said he had not heard of the lawsuit but the matter would be reviewed by the superintendent's office.
