EUGENE - Father Bill Karath, a pastor and teacher for the Archdiocese of Portland, died at Sacred Heart Hospital here, Jan. 11. He was 56.

Father Karath, who served in parishes in Columbus, Ohio, and Portland, was born Feb. 21, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio.

He attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. He did his theological studies in Rome, receiving an STB degree from the Gregorian University in 1970 and an STL from the Angelicum in 1972. He was ordained at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome on Dec. 17, 1971, by Bishop James Hickey for the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio.

His first assignment in Columbus involved teaching religion at Bishop Ready High School while serving as associate pastor at St. Mary Magdalene Parish in Columbus.

He finished his ministry at Holy Trinity Parish in Bandon, where he served for 13 years. He was pastor there until he went on leave late last spring.

'We loved Father Bill,' said Sharon Hennick, a parishioner at Holy Trinity Parish. 'He engendered strong feelings.'

During his seminary years, he taught and ministered in Kenya, and he frequently returned there to visit friends.

He came to Portland in August 1975 and joined the faculty of Central Catholic High School. He taught comparative religion and took several classes of students on trips to the Middle East and Europe. He also worked at the school as a soccer coach. He played 'club' football in Europe and in Portland. One of the teams he coached at Central Catholic made it to the state finals.

While teaching at Central, he was in residence at various times at a number of Portland parishes: St. Stephen, St. Therese, All Saints and St. Thomas More. He was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Portland in 1979.

He was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen Hoffman.

He is survived by his parents Edward and Jeanne Karath, Albany, N.Y.; siblings Thomas Karath, Albany, N.Y.; John Karath, Bozeman, Mont.; Mary Jeanne Garland, Chandler, Ariz.; Michael Karath, Fishkill, N.Y.; Robert Karath, Albany, N.Y.; a brother-in-law and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral Mass was scheduled for noon Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Holy Trinity Parish in Bandon.

Condolences may be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Karath, 157 Woodlawn Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
