SPRINGFIELD -- The Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau has received an accusation of sexual abuse of a minor that allegedly occurred 40 years ago. After inquiry, the allegation was assessed as credible by diocesan officials and the Diocesan Sexual Misconduct Review Board.

The priest accused, Louis Wyrsch, was ordained in 1964, left priestly ministry in 1973, and later married. He was dispensed from the priesthood by the Church in 1989 and died in 1997. The diocese is presently in contact with the complainant as part of its established procedures in such a matter.

Priesthood history of Louis Wyrsch:

1965 Associate Pastor, Sacred Heart Parish, Poplar Bluff

1968 Associate Pastor, St. Peter's Parish, Joplin

1969 On Leave from the Diocese

1970 Chaplain, Southwest Missouri State College

1973 Left priesthood
