VALLEY FORGE, Pa. -- The Rev. George James Callaghan, 79, died Dec. 24, 2008.

He was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Rochester, N.H., to Frank and Esther Callaghan. Rev. Callaghan was raised in Rochester and was a 1947 graduate of Spaulding High School.

He was a 1951 graduate of Villanova University and in 1956 became ordained with the Augustinian Order of Priests. He spent a good part of his life as a high school teacher and doing parish work in Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. He counseled at Merrimack College and Villanova University.

He enjoyed traveling to the warm islands of Jamaica and Aruba. When he lived in Rochester, he was very active in supporting sports and enjoyed playing golf at Nippo Lake CC and Farmington CC. When he took vacations to New Hampshire he would always love saying Mass at St. Mary's Church. He also loved to spend time with his many nieces and nephews.

Family includes two brothers, Frank Callaghan of Rochester and Gerald Callaghan of Tucson Ariz.; three sisters, Mary Harding of Rochester and Madelyn Elliott and Barbara Provenzano, both of Bristol Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Calling hours are Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A funeral Mass is Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church on Lowell St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in the spring.
