  Father George Brennan Served Several Sarasota Parishes

Father George Brennan, a retired priest of the Diocese of Venice who worked at numerous parishes, died Jan. 20, 2011. He was 71.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane said he was saddened by the death of Father Brennan. "He joined the priesthood later in life but served in the Diocese of Venice with distinction and honor. My condolences got out to his sister and friends. Please pray for the repose of his soul. May he rest in peace."

Father Brennan was born in Providence, R.I. on Jan. 20, 1940. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in English from St. Meinrad College in St. Meinrad, Ind., in 1983. From there he joined St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach where he later earned a Master's Degree in Divinity.

He was ordained on May 17, 1987 at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice by then-Bishop John J. Nevins.

As a priest of the Diocese, Father Brennan served at Incarnation Parish in Sarasota; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish in Sarasota; St. Paul Parish in Arcadia; and as Administrator of St. Patrick Parish in Sarasota. Father Brennan retired in September 2008. In recent years he had been assisting at Incarnation Parish.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Jan. 26, 2011 at Incarnation Parish in Sarasota. Interment will take place in Massachusetts.

He is survived by his sister Jeanne Allen, of Massachusetts; and nieces Geraldine Delisle of New Hampshire, and Cathleen Callahan of Massachusetts.
