  Press Release
Priest Placed on Administrative Leave

Diocese of Charlotte
No Date

On Friday October 12, 2007 the Diocese of Charlotte received an allegation of sexual misconduct involving a member of the clergy. The allegation was faxed to the diocese from Wilmington, Delaware by an attorney who then held a press conference to repeat the allegation.

The allegation of misconduct is reported to have taken place 47 years ago at a summer camp in Maryland. The allegation states that inappropriate sexual contact took place between a seminary student and a 12 year-old boy.

As a result of the allegation, and in keeping with its commitment to The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, the Diocese of Charlotte has placed Father Albert J. Gondek, OSFS, on administrative leave. The diocese is in the process of contacting officials of Fr. Gondek's religious order, The Oblates of St. Francis de Sales of Wilmington, DE. The diocese awaits the results of their investigation.

Fr. Gondek has served as pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary in Lexington, NC since 1998. No allegations of misconduct have been made about him during his service in the diocese.

Masses at Our Lady of the Rosary will continue to take place at their regularly scheduled times.
