The Rev. Eugene F. CLARAHAN



The Rev. Eugene F. Clarahan Age 74, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington died May 26 at Christiana Hospital. Father Clarahan served the local Catholic Diocese in parishes in DE and the Eastern Shore of MD during his active ministry. He had been a priest for 47 years.

He was a native of Philadelphia and served as pastor of St. Benedict parish in Ridgely and its mission church of St. Elizabeth in Denton, both in MD, from 1987-1993, the year he retired from active ministry. At the time of his death, he had been living at Vianney House, a retirement facility for priests in Wilmington.

Prior to his appointment in Ridgely, he was pastor of Church of the Good Shepherd, Perryville and its mission churches of St. Agnes, Rising Sun and St. Teresa at Port Deposit, both in MD, from 1983-1987. From 1978-1983, he was pastor of Holy Cross parish in Dover, DE. His first assignment as pastor was to St. Peter's in New Castle from 1968-1978.

He also served as associate pastor at Corpus Christi parish in Elsmere from 1952-1960 and was named chaplain of state institutions in 1960. Father Clarahan studied chaplaincy training at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Washington, DC as well as the Catholic University of America.

Father Clarahan was dean of what was then called the Southern New Castle-Cecil Deanery, was a member of the priest's personnel committee and served as Knights of Columbus chaplain in Southern DE. He also served in the capacity of coordinator of health affairs for the diocese in the late 1970's.

Father is survived by his brothers, John of Bridgeport, PA and Neil of Lewes, DE; sisters, Theresa Vitulli of Treasure Island, FL and Sister Brigid Clarahan, SSJ, of Wilmington; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Father was preceded in death by his parents John and Bridget Clarahan, his brother, Joseph Clarahan and his sister, Sr. Emerita, SSJ.

A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary parish, Liftwood, Wilmington, at 11 am Saturday, May 29. Viewing will take place at the church from 9-11 am. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made to Vianney House for Priests, 905 Milltown Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808 Arrangements by the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME Wilmington
