03/13/03) NORTH BABYLON - The Long Island Voices of the Faithful gathered for its monthly meeting on Thursday and there was much criticism about the Rockville Centre Diocese's latest financial report.

The Diocese issued its annual report two weeks ago. One figure that especially stood out was the $362 million in cash assets. Many people are left wondering how their contributions to charity are being used. Some have stopped giving money directly to the Diocese altogether, preferring to mail in the contributions directly to the charities they pick or organizations like the Voices of the Faithful. People want to know where their money is going.

A Diocese spokesperson said that they are not hiding anything and are releasing various financials in separate reports. As for the $362 million, the Diocese uses the assets much like a savings and loan bank, offering low interest rates to individual programs and parishes in need.

Both sides agree that there is a need more increased financial openness and clarity. The Diocese says it will release other financial reports by the end of this month.
