A priest who has been working at a Kingston church for the past five years has been sacked and defrocked after it emerged he was convicted in the 70s for indecently assaulting a child.

The congregation of St Luke's Church in Burton Road was in deep shock this week following the revelation that Father Michael Walter has a spent conviction for child abuse and was thrown out of the church over 30 years ago.

When this came to the attention of the Church of England at Easter he was immediately sacked for a second time and the church has been contacting parents of children in the congregation to check on his behaviour.

The police and the church told the Comet no allegations of improper conduct have been made.

A high level meeting of police, social services and the diocese was held yesterday to discuss what action should be taken now.
