  Priest Extradited

A Roman Catholic priest wanted in Italy on child sex abuse charges has been extradited from Mexico.

Father Edgar Gaudencio Hidalgo Dominguez is charged with abusing several children, and forcing children to engage in sexual activity with each other.

The abuse allegedly took place while he was serving in a parish in Naples, Italy, in the 1990s.

Italian authorities issued an arrest warrant for Hidalgo in November 1999, but he fled to Mexico.

In August 2002, Mexico's Federal Investigation Agency, acting on a request from Interpol in Rome, located Hidalgo at the parish of Santa Maria de Guadalupe in Iztapalapa, a working-class neighborhood of Mexico City.

He was arrested while Mexico studied an extradition request from Italy and has been in custody ever since.

The Church has never made an official comment on why Hidalgo had been allowed to work as a priest when he was wanted by Italian authorities.
