Archbishop Hopes to Heal Turmoil in Diocese
The New Leader of Catholics in Arizona Is Asking for Forgiveness

Capital News [Phoenix AZ]
June 22, 2003

Archbishop Michael Sheehan said his "heart goes out to all who are hurting." He's been temporarily assigned to the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

In a letter to be read in parishes today, he seeks forgiveness for sexually abusive priests and a fatal hit-and-run that led to the resignation of Bishop Thomas O'Brien.

Sheehan said he looks forward to healing turmoil in the diocese. The letter stated, "Like the Phoenix bird rising from the ashes, the Church of Phoenix will rise to new heights".
