Catholic Priest Sentenced in Chile for Sexual Abuse

Voice of America News
June 24, 2003

A Chilean judge has sentenced a local Roman Catholic priest to 12 years in prison on charges of sexually abusing 10 girls.

The Santiago judge issued the sentence Tuesday - and ordered Jose Andres Aguirre to pay $70,000 to two of the girls whose families demanded compensation. One girl gave birth to a baby boy.

The judge also ruled that the Santiago church be legally forced to pay the damages if the priest fails to do so. The sentence can still be appealed.

The Associated Press reported the case led Santiago Archbishop, Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz to appear on television last year to ask Chileans for forgiveness in the name of the church.
