(Phoenix-AP) -- Archbishop Michael Sheehan says he'd be willing to send letters overseas to priests accused of sexual abuse to ask them to return to the U.S. to face criminal charges.

Last week, Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley sent a letter to Rome asking the Vatican to order two priests wanted on sexual abuse charges to surrender.

The letter was returned to sender.

The package sent to the Vatican included sexual abuse indictments against two men who worked as priests in the Phoenix diocese. Those men are believed to be living in Ireland and Mexico.

Sheehan says he's open to the idea of sending a letter but hasn't been asked to do so, but he cautions that such a strategy might be futile.

He says if they were obedient people, they wouldn't have gotten into trouble in the first place.
