An audit is under way in the Catholic Archdiocese of Anchorage to determine whether adequate policies and procedures are in place to protect children and deal with sexual abuse issues.

Independent auditors working for the Conference of Catholic Bishops are reviewing the policies of all 195 dioceses in the United States under a plan approved last year.

The auditors will be working in Anchorage for the remainder of the week. The findings will be sent to the church's national Office for the Protection of Children and Youth.

A report will be delivered to Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz by the end of September.

The audit is being conducted by 54 auditors through the Gavin Group of Boston, a firm run by William Gavin, a former FBI director.

The auditors were in the Juneau Diocese last week and will be in Fairbanks next week.
