The first Sunday of Lent included an appeal for forgiveness by Archbishop Patrick Flores.

This after a controversial national study revealed the severity of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church.

Nationwide there have been molestation claims against nearly 4,400 U.S. Priests from 1950 to 2002.

Locally, 58 victims made sexual abuse allegations against 20 priests during that period.

The Archdiocese has paid more than $5-million-dollars in settlements and counseling.

A local organization that helps victims of sexual abuse by priests say reporting it is everybody's responsibility.

"People need to protect our community, they need to protect our children, and they need to come forward, and parents have got to come forward and say "We're tired of this, we've got to have some changes and quickly," said Barbara Boehland.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests has a local chapter.
