A 63-year-old priest was sentenced yesterday to two years in prison for sexually molesting a boy over a period of years.

Rodrigue Émond, walking haltingly with a cane, was led away by two police officers after the sentence was read in the Longueuil courthouse.

The acts occurred between January 1988 and Januarry 1992. The child was 6 when the abuse began and Emond was 47.

The victim, now 22, cannot be identified because he was a minor at the time of the crimes. The molestation ended when the boy’s family moved to another neighbourhood when he was 10 years old. Before rendering his sentence, Judge Denys Nöel pointed out that the boy’s personality changed after the molestation. He went from a happy child to a fearful and withdrawn youngster who was unable to form friendships with other boys after the move.

At his lowest point after he lost his car, his license and his job he tried to commit suicide.

Émond plead guilty in March 2003 to two counts of sexually touching a minor.
