The editorial said proposed settlement amounts were inadequate based on the average amount of past settlements. The editorial gave an inaccurate figure for past settlements, which, based on figures from the diocese and attorneys, averaged less than $500,000 per victim. The amount of future settlements is not known. The diocese has proposed a tiered settlement system ranging up to $600,000, depending on the degree of abuse. A federal bankruptcy judge will set payments.
