Former Bishop Eamonn Casey is reportedly set to return to Ireland tomorrow to live out his retirement in his former Co Galway diocese.

The 78-year-old fled Ireland in 1992 after the revelation that he had fathered a son with an American woman whom he had been involved with for some time.

Dr Casey had already indicated his intention to return to Galway once a sexual assault allegation against him was dealt with.

However, reports this morning said he had grown weary of waiting for Gardai to contact him in Britain and was planning to return home himself and make contact with detectives investigating the case.

A woman has accused Dr Casey of sexually assaulting her when she was a child more than 20 years ago, but he has vigorously denied the allegation and says he is confident of being vindicated.
