There can be nothing more heartbreaking for a parent than to lose a child.

For that child to die by his own hand is the most devastating blow of all.

Mary McCloskey's pain and rage at her son Peter's death was laid bare at a press conference held by her family yesterday.

It emerged that Peter – abused by a priest when he was an innocent young alter boy – killed himself after years of battling for truth and justice.

His mother, Mary, has laid the blame for her son's agonised death squarely at the door of Bishop of Limerick Donal Murray.

Whether or not Bishop Murray decides to take Mrs McCloskey's recommendation and resign is a matter for his own conscience.

What is clear though is that the suffering of clerical abuse victims is disgracefully continuing beyond their initial horrific ordeal.

If the Catholic Church can relieve their agony in any small way – by being completely open and forthcoming with details of how their abuser was dealt with – then it must do so.
