Father and son charged with robbing Mesa bank

MESA -Police released the names of the father and son accused of robbing a credit union Thursday.

Christopher A. Baeza Sr., 42, and Christopher Michael Baeza Jr. 24, both of Mesa, were arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and possession of a weapon, officials said Friday.

Both are suspects in a robbery at the same credit union last month.

Baeza Jr. is on probation for armed robbery.

Police say the two men robbed the Tempe Schools Credit Union at 2136 E. Baseline Road in Mesa at 12:45 p.m.

A Mesa officer used his patrol car to stop the fleeing suspects.

Judge sets June 2 trial for former Mesa pastor

GILBERT - Attorneys for Monsignor Dale Fushek should be prepared for a June 2 trial, a judge said Friday.

Fushek, a former pastor of St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Mesa, is charged with engaging teen boys in sexually explicit conversations, inappropriately touching them and exposing himself.

His attorneys argued several motions Friday in San Tan Justice Court, complaining to Justice of the Peace Sam Goodman that they had too many witnesses to interview in too short of a time.

A hearing was set for 1 p.m. Wednesday to consider a new motion filed by the defense.

Tempe man sentenced in 1998 murder of son

MESA - Alan Sojka Jr., was sentenced Friday to 52 years in prison in connection with the 1998 murder of his 5-year-old son in Tempe.

The sentence, handed down in Maricopa County Superior Court in Mesa includes a 35-year term for first-degree murder and a 17-year sentence for six counts of child abuse. Sojka, 32, will receive credit for four years.

His son, Cody, was found dead in his crib on a makeshift mattress of carpet and foam in his home in the 400 block of West Baseline Road. The boy had suffered rib fractures, bruises on his face and back and injuries to his fingers and toes.

The boy's mother, Michelle Heath, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2003 for failing to get medical help before Cody died.

Police seek man who raped Tempe woman

TEMPE - Police were searching Friday for a man who sexually assaulted a woman after threatening her with a gun. The man followed the woman from a store between 9 and 11 p.m. Thursday near Hardy and University drives and took her to her home, where she was sexually assaulted, police said.

The man is described as Black, 18 to 19 years old, 5-foot-9, 180 to 200 pounds, with a thin mustache and a gold hoop earring, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Tempe Police Department at (480) 350-8311.
