SALEM -- A former church baby sitter has been convicted of molesting a 9-year-old church member and given the maximum sentence of nine to 10 years in state prison and 10 years probation.

Kevin Curlew, 44, who acted as his own lawyer at trial, molested the son of a fellow member of a Methuen Mormon Church.

"He is the classic sexual predator," Salem Superior Court Judge Howard Whitehead said at Thursday's sentencing. "He is the true danger to society."

In court, Curlew said the judge was treating him unfairly and had been "compromised beyond redemption."

Prosecutor Maureen Wilson Leal said Curlew's history included more than court records indicated. She said he had admitted to inappropriate conduct with a child in Lowell that did not lead to criminal charges. She also said after the charges in the current case became public, a relative of Curlew's came forward to say Curlew had abused her also.

The victim's mother gave the judge a written impact statement that said she once believed Curlew, whom she met in the church, shared her morals.

"Then you whispered perverted things into my child's ear," the statement said.

"How is this going to affect him later on?"
