The Loveland neighborhood of a Catholic priest charged with molesting two youths was blanketed with fliers Monday by a group of people who said they had been victims of sexual assaults.

"I don't want to see any other children raped," said Jeb Barrett, a leader of the Denver branch of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests.

Barrett said he left the fliers because he was raped decades ago when a priest in Missoula, Mont., plied him with alcohol.

Barrett and other SNAP members had to knock on the doors of the Rev. Timothy Evans' neighbors, he said, because the Catholic Church doesn't warn people when a priest abuses children.

"They leave them out there like minefields," he said.

Evans, 43, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury in August on charges that between 1995 and 1997 he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old boy he was counseling.

Evans, who is out on $25,000 bond, is accused of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, according to the Jefferson County district attorney's office.

At the time of the assaults, Evans was assigned to Spirit of Christ Catholic Community in Arvada as a vicar, the indictment said. Evans is alleged to have fondled the boy while massaging him.

Evans did not answer his door or telephone Monday.

Leon Cluff, whose wife babysits two children, said he had no idea a man accused of child molestation lived a block away from him.

"I know you are innocent until proven guilty, but you still want to protect your children," Cluff said.

Jenna Schaefer looked down at her 2-year-old son when she heard the news.

"It's just kind of shocking," she said. "It is good to know, especially if he's on the same block."

Evans also faces charges in Larimer County of sexually assaulting a Fort Collins youth in 1999 while he was pastor at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.

In that case, the arrest affidavit says Evans had been accused of two other sexual liaisons, one with a minor in Arvada in 1996 and another with a married adult seeking guidance from Evans in 2000 in Fort Collins.

Evans has not been charged with a crime related to the 2000 Fort Collins incident. The Archdiocese of Denver has forbidden Evans from performing any priestly duties.
