A former Wilmington youth pastor was arrested and charged Friday in connection with a rape reported more than a year ago.

About 2 p.m., Kevin Laymon, 26, turned himself in to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Detective Sgt. S.B. Johnson said.

He has been charged with four felonies including statutory rape, statutory sex offense and two counts of indecent liberties with a minor. The Star-News does not identify victims of alleged sexual offenses.

He was released from the New Hanover County jail Friday afternoon after posting a $75,000 bond and will make his first court appearance Monday in the New Hanover County Courthouse, Johnson said.

Johnson said the victim, who was 15 when the alleged rape occurred in June 2004, met Laymon while volunteering at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She did not file a report until June 2005.

Laymon was doing community service at the hospital for a traffic violation.

Johnson would not release the name of the church where Laymon served and helped tutor local youth.

A husband and wife who died in a two-vehicle collision about 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of U.S. 74 and N.C. 11 in Columbus County were identified as Mary and Gordon Squires, of Kelly in Bladen County.

Both were 89 years old.

State Trooper Neil Troutman said Mary Squires was driving the couple's compact GMC pickup truck on N.C. 11 and stopped at a stop sign before accelerating into the path of a westbound flatbed tractor-trailer driven by John Traub, 44, of Jacksonville.

The couple died at the scene.

"It was raining, but I don't feel rain or speed was a factor. They failed to yield at the intersection," Troutman said. "It appears she just pulled into his path."

Traub was not injured. No citations were issued. An inspection of the tractor-trailer showed no equipment violations, Troutman said.
