A grand jury in Butler County, Ohio, indicted retired Blacksburg Middle School teacher Jonathan Utin today on 16 charges -- eight counts of rape of a child under the age of 10 and eight counts of gross sexual imposition. The indictment charges that the crimes were committed between 1998 and 2002.

Each of the rape charges carries a potential life sentence.

Butler County Prosecutor Robin Piper said in a press release that he intends to seek a life sentence in the case.

In announcing the charges, Piper praised the detective work that led to Utin's arrest. That investigation, Piper said in the release, "unearthed many, many other incidences which took place in Virginia."

Utin will be prosecuted in Virginia, Piper said, "but not until we are done with him."

Blacksburg police are investigating Utin's alleged victimization of children in Virginia. Blacksburg Capt. Kim Crannis said the department plans to file charges against Utin after an investigation is completed.

Utin was arrested Sept. 18 in Blacksburg and taken to Ohio.

According to a search warrant filed in Montgomery County, Utin told police he had a fixation with girls ages 3 to 9. The warrant said he admitted "several inappropriate relationships with minors spanning a 30-year period."

Piper said Utin "has created a string of victims over the last decade. Jonathon Utin has been molesting children for over 30 years."

Utin is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning in Hamilton, Ohio, on the Ohio charges.

Utin taught science and math to Montgomery County middle-schoolers from 1968 to 2003, when he retired. After retiring, Utin apparently worked occasionally as a substitute teacher. He was known for the annual "dairy show" he put on, taking Blacksburg sixth-graders to Virginia Tech's barns to teach them about calves.

Utin coached gymnastics, led star-gazing trips, taught Sunday school at Christ Episcopal Church and was a manager at the Shawnee Swim Club. The warrant alleges that Utin molested the Ohio girl at the swim club and at his home.

The warrant also said Utin told police he was extremely remorseful and had kept in touch with some victims to ensure their well-being.

Police took photo albums, computers and other items from Utin's house on Toms Creek road.

In 2002, a period when the Ohio indictment says he was molesting at least one girl, Utin served as grand marshal of Blacksburg's Fourth of July parade. He won town civic beautification awards for his house and garden that year, too.

A native of Oxfordshire, England, Utin was a kicker on the Virginia Tech football team from 1965 through 1967. His holder was Frank Beamer, now the Hokies' head coach.
