A court has heard how a southern Tasmanian man told a teenage girl he had her mother's permission to teach her sexual techniques.

The 51-year-old man has pleaded guilty to maintaining a sexual relationship with the girl while he was living with her mother in the early 90s.

The man began abusing the girl in 1993 when she was 15.

The Hobart Criminal Court heard he had taken on a father-figure role while living in a de facto relationship with her mother.

The man told the girl he was going to train her in sexual techniques so she would be able to satisfy her future partners.

The girl was told her mother knew about the lessons.

When confronted by someone about the abuse, the man said the girl was going to have oral sex with other men anyway, so she should learn how to do it properly with someone who cared about her.

Defence lawyer Michael Daly told the court his client had suffered significant childhood sexual abuse himself at the hands of a priest.

The man will be sentenced next week.
