Ventura, Calif. — A former assistant pastor in Iowa has pleaded guilty to molesting a student at a church-run school in the late 1980s.

William Malgren, 52, was arrested in Idaho earlier this month for sexually assaulting the girl from 1983 to 1989. At the time, Malgren was a pastor at Thousand Oaks Baptist Church school in northwest Los Angeles.

The girl — now a woman in her 30s — was a student there.

Malgren served as an assistant pastor at Burton Avenue Baptist Church in Waterloo, Iowa, in the early 1990s.

For the past decade, Malgren has been a pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Moscow, Idaho.

Malgren pleaded guilty last week to two counts of committing lewd acts upon a child and two counts of oral copulation of a person under 16. He was accused of molesting the girl from when she was 7 until she turned 14, but the statute of limitations only permitted his prosecution for acts that occurred in 1988 and 1989.

He faces up to 11 years and four months in prison.

Malgren was asked to leave the Ventura County church in 1989 after someone reported him acting inappropriately with the girl, detectives said.

The woman, who now lives in another state, came forward with her story over the summer, authorities said.

Police believe there may have been other victims, based on several phone calls received by the Sheriff's Department after Malgren's arrest.

"They did not want to identify themselves," Detective Mike Hartmann said. "They didn't want to live through the pain unless it was absolutely necessary."
