Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley on Thursday became the first U.S. cardinal to launch a blog, coinciding with his 10-day trip to Rome.

Cardinal O'Malley is planning to file items at least once a day during that trip, which began Thursday, and will consider making the blog permanent, writes Reuter, citing a Boston Globe article. O'Malley, who was named to head the Boston archdiocese in 2003 after his predecessor resigned amid charges that the church had covered up cases of priests' being accused of pedophilia, has said the church should be more transparent.

"While this is a new venture for me, and for the Archdiocese, I am eager to take advantage of the latest technology and mode of communication to share with Catholics of the Archdiocese my experiences as I return to Rome," O'Malley wrote on his blog.
