An Adelaide lawyer has welcomed a Catholic Church proposal to deal with abuse claims outside the court.

It is understood the Archdiocese of Adelaide is planning a new complaints handling system.

Its aim is to deal with physical and sexual abuse claims against the Goodwood Orphanage in Adelaide.

Lawyer Peter Humphries acts for a group of alleged victims and he is pleased with the proposal, but wants to negotiate some changes.

"Both explanation of some aspects of the scheme, I have a couple of questions to make sure that I clearly understand what it is that's being proposed in a couple of areas," he said.

"But also a bit of finetuning which I think would perhaps be appropriate."

Mr Humphries says he will meet church officials tomorrow to discuss the idea.

"It's pleasing that the church have come forward with this proposal," he said.

"I have a couple of matters that I want to discuss with them tomorrow and I'm hoping there will be some opportunity of compromise but it's a major step there's no doubt about that."
