A former Tasmanian priest has successfully appealed against his conviction for sexually abusing young boys at Burnie's Marist College, in the state's north.

In February this year a Criminal Court jury found 70-year-old Roger Michael Bellemore guilty on four counts of maintaining a sexual relationship with a person under 17.

It was alleged Bellemore committed the offences in the late 60s and early 70s while working as a teacher at the college.

He was given five years' jail with a non-parole period of three years.

The Court of Criminal Appeal in Hobart has allowed Bellemore's appeal and quashed his convictions.

Bellemore has been released on bail to face a new trial next year.
