A civil suit involving a former Green Bay priest and the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay is in Taylor County Circuit Court today.

At issue is how the diocese handled reports of abuse by Donald Buzanowski. He was convicted of sexually assaulting David Schauer and is serving 32 years in prison. Buzanowski has also been removed from the priesthood.

Schauer sued the former priest and the diocese. The issue in court this week is the timing Schauer's lawsuit and if the diocese did anything that affected when he filed the civil suit.

If the jury rules against Schauer, the case is over. If it sides with Schauer, a trial on the abuse will go forward.

Buzanowski was convicted of assaulting Schauer in 1988 when Schauer was ten. The civil suit alleges the diocese and school officials were aware that Buzanowski preyed on boys and failed to protect students.

The diocese has denied any wrongdoing.
