A Roman Catholic priest is being held in Phoenix on charges that he assaulted a woman who worked at his Las Vegas church.

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in Maricopa County to determine whether the Rev. George Chaanine will waive extradition from Arizona to Nevada. Clark County District Attorney David Roger told KLAS-TV that Chaanine could remain in Arizona for months if he fights extradition.

Chaanine was arrested Thursday when police near Phoenix pulled him over, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

The charges include attempted murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, sexual assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.

The alleged victim, Michaelina Bellamy, said Chaanine hit her on the head with a wine bottle and fondled her breasts and genitals. Chaanine allegedly had Bellamy pinned to the ground and was trying to strangle her when he stopped.

"I am over the edge," he reportedly said. "I am going to kill myself. Wait for 15 minutes. I will get you an ambulance."
