A Catholic priest who once served in Wheeling has been arrested in Arizona.

Father George Chaanine, 52, was taken into custody in Apache Junction, a town east of Phoenix.

He has been wanted since Jan. 26 in connection with the beating of a woman inside a church.

Father Chaanine served for about 18 months as pastor of Our Lady of Lebanon.

Over the weekend, police in Las Vegas believed Father Chaanine had barricaded himself inside Our Lady of Las Vegas, but he had already made his escape by car.

The priest was well thought of by many who attended his church in Las Vegas and here in Wheeling.

A judge issued a warrant on Tesday for his arrest on attempted murder charges.
