A former high priest of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) has been sentenced to one year in prison for pedophilia.

A court in Novi Sad pronounced the verdict today to Ilarion, a former head of the Hopovo Monastery in Frushka Gora.

Ilarion, whose secular name is Jovan Mishic, has been found guilty for committed sexual abuse on as many as ten boys aged 7 to 11.

The court, which had ordered a closed trial in order to protect the minors, announced it won't reveal any further details.

Last October, Mishic was found guilty on three counts of sexual abuse and jailed for ten months.

However, in December the court upheld the appeal lodged by the victims' lawyers, and altered Mishic's sentence to one-year imprisonment.

Ilarion was arrested in 2001 after being accused of "taking advantage of underage boys' naiveté for satisfying his sexual desires".
