Activists who say they were sexually abused by Roman Catholic priests passed out leaflets yesterday to parishioners at St. Joseph's Cathedral.

The protesters were from Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests. The group frequently hands out leaflets at churches across Southern California to draw attention to the clergy sexual abuse scandal.

The leaflet criticized San Diego Bishop Robert Brom's announcement last week that the diocese might have to file for bankruptcy protection if it can't reach a settlement in about 145 lawsuits alleging abuse by priests and church personnel. The first of those suits is scheduled to go to trial Wednesday.

The group members said the bankruptcy threat is a tactic to avoid trials and prevent information about the scandals from being aired in open court.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs and the diocese met for six hours last week to try to forge a last-minute deal. They are scheduled to meet again today.
