Catholics in western Oregon will participate in an Ember Day on Wednesday, March 7.

An Ember Day is a day set aside for voluntary prayer and fasting.

Archbishop John Vlazny instituted Ember Days in the Archdiocese of Portland in 2002 as a way for the church in western Oregon to reach out to and pray for victims of child sexual abuse and their families.

Archbishop Vlazny specified that the Ember Days be celebrated on three occasions each year, in Advent, the season leading up to Christmas, in Lent, the season leading to Easter, and in September.

Archbishop Vlazny will celebrate the 5:30 p.m. Mass in St. Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland (NW 18th & Couch) on the Ember Day, Wednesday, March 7. All are invited to attend.

Parishes in the Archdiocese are encouraged to plan their own prayerful celebrations for this Ember Day.
