Pope Benedict the 16th today accepted the resignation of Bishop Charles Grahmann as head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas.

Grahmann had offered his resignation in July when he turned 75 -- which is the normal retirement age for bishops. Grahmann has led the Dallas diocese since 1990.

The pope has named 59-year-old Bishop Kevin Farrell as Grahmann's successor. The Dublin, Ireland native had been serving as an auxiliary bishop in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D-C, since 2002.

Farrell was ordained into the priesthood in 1978 and assigned in 1983 to the Washington archdiocese, which includes the District of Columbia and five southern Maryland counties.

Since his ordination as an auxiliary bishop in 2002, Ferrell has been involved in administering the archdiocese's sexual abuse policy for members of the clergy, employees and adult volunteers. He has met with 84 people who have alleged incidents of abuse.

Farrell will be introduced to the Dallas media at an 11 a.m. news conference.

The Dallas diocese is the tenth largest in the nation with about one (M) million members in 74 parishes.
