The Rev. Thomas Teczar was a child predator who used others to help him find his victims, a Texas Ranger testified Tuesday in the aggravated sexual assault trial of the former Fort Worth Diocese priest.

The Ranger described Teczar as using another man — who was later convicted of sexual assault — as a "forward scout" to gain access to potential victims.

Teczar pleaded "not guilty" to charges that he sexually assaulted an 11-year old boy in the 1990s in Ranger.

Teczar, who served in several parishes including nearby Ranger, was a priest in the Fort Worth Roman Catholic Diocese until his departure in 1993. Teczar left the county, then the state, after refusing to testify before a grand jury about the investigation into his friends.

Witnesses testified that Teczar exposed his victim to alcohol, drugs and pornography.

Police have said that Teczar had sex with the two men now serving long prison sentences for child abuse involving as many as nine children

Teczar faces three counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of indecency with a child. He is believed to be one of the only Fort Worth Diocese priests to face criminal sex abuse charges. In 2005, the diocese settled for $4.15 million a lawsuit with two Teczar accusers , one of whom filed the criminal complaint in Eastland.

His brother, Edward Teczar, told the court Tuesday, "I know my brother. I know what he's capable of and what he's not capable of. I know he's been falsely accused of something he would never do. Ever."

Testimony will continue Wednesday in Eastland's 91st State District Court. Eastland is about 90 miles west of Fort Worth.
