He's an Irishman born in Dublin, a Redskins fan for the last 24 years and soon, the 7th Bishop of Dallas.

"It was a great surprise to me when I was informed that I was going to Dallas!" said Bishop Kevin Farrell.

Farrell already speaks Spanish.

He spent six years in Mexico which will serve him well as the local Catholic population - largely Hispanic - has swelled to more than a million.

"Well certainly Bishop Farrell has the gifts, being involved in the Hispanic ministry and in Mexico, to be able to continue to meet the needs of Hispanic Catholics," said Bishop Kevin Vann, in Fort Worth.

Farrell admitted he knows little about Dallas, but recognizes - and even welcomes the difficulties ahead - and the support of his new flock.

"I look forward to that, I think it's a great challenge and I actually enjoy the challenge, and I have a certain amount of respect, and fear shall we say, a holy fear of what awaits me."

"I think the Pope has given us a great new bishop to succeed bishop Grahmann, I think great things are going to happen in this diocese," said parishioner, Patricia Sherk.

His stand on sexual abuse within the church?

"I believe the church has done more than any other institution over the last several years to protect children."

On the war in Iraq?

"We as the United States have a moral obligation to see that the people of Iraq now live in a situation where there is peace and justice."

An on his Irish family?

"My brother is a bishop, my older brother, but I was a bishop before he was. So, there is still a bit of sibling rivalry!"
