A Roman Catholic cleric who has spent nearly 24 years in the Washington area is moving to Texas. Pope Benedict has appointed Bishop Kevin Farrell to the bishop's post in the Diocese of Dallas.

The 59 year-old priest is a native of Dublin, Ireland. He was ordained in 1978 and assigned to the Archdiocese of Washington in 1983.

Since his ordination as an auxiliary bishop in 2002, he has been involved in administering the Archdiocese's sexual abuse policy for members of the clergy, employees and adult volunteers. He has met with 84 people who have alleged incidents of abuse.

Farrell is leaving the Archdiocese of Washington which serves about 580,000 Roman Catholics in the District and five southern Maryland counties. The Diocese of Dallas is the tenth largest in the nation with about one million members in 74 parishes.

Farrell will be introduced to the Dallas media at an 11 a.m. news conference Tuesday.
