A lawsuit alleging sexual abuse has stunned a popular pastor who grew up in the Ottawa area.

Rev. Allen Tysick told the Victoria Times-Colonist yesterday that he was shocked by the news that a woman in the Ottawa area has brought a lawsuit against him.

"This is a complete surprise to me," Tysick said. "I'll pursue it. I've got to pursue it. I've got to call this lawyer or get a lawyer myself."

Tysick, who lives on Vancouver Island and is known for his charitable work, said he had never been served with legal papers.

The allegations "hit me like a ton of bricks," he said.

The suit also names the United Church of Canada and two groups Tysick worked with in Eastern Ontario.

The complainant, who's now 45, alleges Tysick used his position of trust to sexually exploit her between 1990 and 1992.

A statement of defence has not yet been filed.
